Host City Munich
Munich – A modern city with tradition
The history of Munich is documented all the way back to 1158 when it was first mentioned as “forum apud Munichen.” The Old German name means “by the monks” and derives from the monks who ran a monastery at the place that later became the Old Town of Munich. To this day, a monk is still depicted on the city’s coat of arms.
Today, the Bavarian state capital is the 3rd-largest city in Germany – behind Berlin and Hamburg – and one of the most prosperous and fastest-growing cities in the country. Consistently regarded as one of Europe’s most liveable cities, Munich offers promising career opportunities, a low crime rate, a broad selection of leisure and recreational activities plus an efficient infrastructure ensuring a high quality of life.
A metropolis with small-town charm
Munich has become a household name around the globe in various sectors, be it art, science, technology, education, or sports. The city is home to a host of world-famous brands, such as BMW, Siemens, Allianz, and Bayern Munich. A broad range of culture can be experienced in the 47 theatres and 46 museums, including the renowned Pinakotheken and the world’s largest technology museum, Deutsches Museum.
Till this day, no building is allowed to be taller than the spires of the Frauenkirche (Cathedral Church of Our Lady), which ensures that Munich does not feel as overwhelming as other cities of its scale. Various other factors add to the cosy vibe, from the city’s parks to Bavaria’s southern charm and famed beer culture. While the Oktoberfest nowadays often pictures a cliché, it is deeply rooted in tradition. When Crown Prince Ludwig married Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen in 1810, the citizens of Munich were invited to attend the festivities held in front of the city’s gates, with horse races marking the close of the royal event. To honour their marriage, the first Oktoberfest was held the following year and over the centuries, it has grown into a global celebration.
Gateway to the Alps
Besides its tourist attractions, Munich boasts many areas of beautiful greenery, with the English Garden alone covering 375 hectares! The Eisbach wave at its southern edge is the most famous river surfing spot, used by keen surfers throughout the year. Almost 14 kilometres long, the Isar river winds its way elegantly through the city, offering plentiful recreational activities on its banks.
With its central European location and proximity to the Alps, Munich is the perfect destination for both city and nature lovers. A plethora of picturesque lakes and mountains are also only a short drive away and provide the perfect setting for a weekend getaway.
European Championships 2022
Nine existing European Championships of the continent’s leading sports are united into one multi-sport event to create a must-watch, must-attend experience that elevates the champions of Europe. Following the success of the inaugural European Championships in Berlin and Glasgow in 2018, Europe’s best athletes will once again be competing for the highest accolade of their sport on the continent – the title of European champion – in Munich in 2022.
By hosting the European Championships Munich 2022, the Bavarian state capital will welcome the biggest sporting event since the 1972 Olympic Games. With the sports programme extended to nine Olympic sports, the bar has been raised even higher for the second edition. From 11-21 August 2022, more than 4,700 elite athletes will fight for glory in Athletics, Beach Volleyball, Canoe Sprint, Cycling, Gymnastics, Rowing, Sport Climbing, Table Tennis, and Triathlon.
With the historic Olympic locations in the spotlight, Munich 2022 will primarily use pre-existing infrastructure and venues, setting an example in terms of sustainability. Short commutes between the venues and excellent public transport will further minimalize the impact on the city and its surroundings. Olympiapark will be at the heart of the event, celebrating its 50th anniversary by using the same principles on which the park was built: a concentration of top sports in one complex, in the heart of Munich and with near-unlimited possibilities to create an outstanding event and festival feeling for all athletes, visitors and fans.
Expect the unexpected
Munich 2022 promises to be much more than just facts, figures, and sporting results. It will be a holistic event experience set to create lasting memories in a light-hearted atmosphere. “The Roofs – Festival of Munich 2022” will contribute significantly to that extravaganza. This festival of diversity and surprises will accompany the European Championships Munich 2022 with a mix of music, culture, art, food and much, much more. It promises to turn Munich into the place to be this summer, with lots to offer both young and old alike.
“The Roofs” is a festival for everyone – a place of encounter, participation, wonder and experience. Surrounded by the frenzy of the sporting competitions and accompanied by the charm and diversity of the regional culture.
The concept of pop-up experiences is to fashion a novel setup and to set the stage – literally and figuratively – for the unexpected. The traditional event setup with the bundling of theme-specific contents in the same area will be rearranged for “The Roofs.” Individually-themed worlds – “Roofs” – will be created, each with their own character in terms of content and design. Spread across Olympiapark, Königsplatz and the Olympic Regatta Centre, visitors and participants will have the opportunity to revel in a total of nine individual “Roofs” and explore a host of extraordinary experiences.
The programme is a tribute to 50 years of Olympiapark and symbolises the variety of this unique location, its history, present, and future. “The Roofs” aim to convey a small-town charm and will focus on uniqueness rather than uniformity.
