Timetable

Please refer to Appendix for the latest version of the competition timetable. It may still be subject to minor changes, based on the number of athletes in the Final Entries.

Competition Bibs

General

For individual events, each competitor will receive four personal bibs with names. These must be pinned to the front and back of the competition clothing, to the back of the tracksuit, and to the bag.

Exceptions are made for jumping events where competitors are permitted to attach the bib only to the front or to the back of their competition clothing (plus their tracksuit and bag).

For track events from 400m onwards, the athletes will receive a bib with a plastic pouch for the transponders that shall be pinned in the front. The front bib with a transponder will be handed out at the Call Room. Meaning, the athletes competing in those track events will receive only three bibs in advance and the front bib will be given to them in the Call Room. After the competition, the athletes should return the transponder at the entrance of the Kit Collection Area, where they will be collected by volunteers.

Bibs must not be cut, folded or covered in any way.

Relays

Each runner in a relay team must wear the bib with the official three-letter country code of his/her national federation on his/her chest. On his/her back the runner must wear the personal bib.

5,000 meters

Each competitor in 5,000 events will receive 4 bibs.

  • 2 bibs with names
  • 1 bib with his/her identification number only on his/her back
  • 1 bib with name on his/her front (distributed in the call room)

10,000 meters

Each competitor in 10,000 events will receive 4 bibs.

  • 2 bibs with names
  • 1 bib with his/her identification number only on his/her back
  • 1 bib with name and identification number on his/her front (distributed in the call room)

Road Races : Marathon and Race Walking Events

Each competitor in Road races events will be given two bibs which must be worn as follows:

  • the bib with his/her name plus identification number on his/her chest,
  • the bib with his/her identification number on his/her back.

They will also have 2 bibs with names.

Combined Events

For the Combined Events, the leading athlete after each event will be given a special chest bib (yellow background), indicating he/she is the leading athlete. In general, these bibs will be distributed at the dedicated Call Room next to the Combined Events Resting Area. In case that the athletes go straight to the next event, the referee in charge will distribute the special bib.

Athletes competing in the last race of the Combined Events will also be given a special bib, to be worn on their chest, which will indicate their position in the competition prior to the last event.

Special bibs

The defending European Champion (orange background) and the current European Leader competing in an individual event (blue background) will wear a special bib to be worn on the chest.

Hip Numbers

Athletes competing in track events will also be given the adhesive hip numbers at the Call Room.

Competition Clothing

Competitors must wear the Federation’s official team clothing. World Athletics Rule 5 of the Technical Rules will be strictly applied. Please make sure to follow the World Athletics Advertising Regulations in force. Clothing and items not conforming to this rule and the current World Athletics Advertising Regulations will be removed/taped at the Call Room.

Member Federations shall confirm their Team Vests using the link above. If the uniform displayed differs from your current official uniform, the revised Team Vests form must be uploaded by 8 August 2022, using the form sent by European Athletics for that specific purpose. Otherwise, the existing records will be used as reference.

Team clothing must be uniform. A competitor wearing any other clothing will have no access to the competition area and will not be allowed to compete. This rule applies both to competition clothing (vest, shorts and tights) as well as to tracksuits.

The rule stipulating the compulsory wearing of the official competition clothing will be applied during the competition, but also during any victory lap, interviews at the Stadium and the Medal Ceremonies.

Competition Shoes

All the competition shoes must comply with World Athletics TR5, including the sole and/or heel and the spikes dimensions. It is the athletes’ responsibility to make sure that the shoes to be used for competition are on the current list of approved shoes models by the World Athletics. In case of no compliance with the TR5 or the list of approved shoes, an athlete may be not allowed to compete or disqualified after the competition with the result being void.

The shoes will be checked after the competition within the Kit Collection in case of doubts or upon special requests, as well as in case of a World or European Record. In case of World Records, the shoes will be withheld by the relevant Referee and sent later to the World Athletics as per TR5.

Call Room

Stadia Events

All athletes will have to report to First Call either at AUF or TUM Warm-up Areas, from where they will be accompanied to the main Call Room, which will be located in the indoor hall at AUF. There will be shuttles from TUM First Call to the main Call Room at AUF. The shuttles will be only for the competing athletes. The coaches and other accompanying personnel will not be allowed to take those shuttles, the AUF is reachable by walking.

Access will be allowed to athletes only and according to the following reporting times (there may be slight amendments in case of particularly large fields in the Field Events qualification):

Athletes who fail to report on time to the Call Room without a valid reason may be excluded from participating in this and all further events in the Championships, including Relays.

A dedicated, heat by heat, Call-up Schedule will be issued once Final Entries are confirmed. It will be displayed at the Warm-up Area, published at the Virtual TIC and handed out at the TIC daily.

Refreshments (still water) and toilets will be available next to the Call Room.

In track events, all athletes leave the Call Room ready to compete and carry their bags to the Final Call, where they will be collected by the Basket Carrier Volunteers. In case of cold conditions, the athletes will be allowed to keep on a vest until they reach the Final Call.

Road Events

The Call Room for the Road Events is located next to the Warm-Up and Team Tent Area and close to the Start and Finish line (see Appendix).

Athletes shall enter the Call Room race ready (if weather allows) or only with small bags. Small bags and clothing can be left in the Kit Collection, which is nearby the Call Room. Access to the Call Room will be allowed to athletes only and according to the following reporting times:

During the competition the Call Room will be transformed into the Anti-Doping Waiting Area.

Call Room Procedures

In the Call Room, the judges will check the following in accordance with World Athletics Rules:

  • Competition Bibs
  • Shoes and Spikes
  • Uniforms
  • Bags (identification on and content of)
  • Any other kind of advertising

Athletes in the combined events need to go through the main Call Room procedure only before their first event of each day (morning session). For all other events, the combined events referee will provide detailed schedule and when the athletes need to report to the Call Room at the Combined Events Resting Area. The schedule, as well as any other relevant information for the combined events athletes, will be shared with the Team Leaders in advance. Plus, posted at the Combined Events Resting Area.

Personal belongings (video cameras, tape recorders, radios, CD players, radio transmitters, MP3/MP4, cell phones or similar devices) will not be permitted in the infield as per World Athletics Rule 6 of the Technical Rules or TR6. Competition officials in Call Room 2 will confiscate all not authorised items. Athletes will receive a receipt for any such items. Upon presentation of this receipt, the athletes will be able to collect such items from the TIC once their event has finished.

Athletes taking part in Road Events will receive a foot transponder to be placed on one of their shoes. Transponders will be handed out at the Call Room. Athletes must ensure the proper placement of the transponder.

After the race and after having passed through the Mixed Zone the Athletes will pass the Kit Collection to collect their clothing. Transponders will be returned when leaving the Kit Collection.

Stadia Events

Track Events

Athletes in Track Events will be asked to enter infield already dressed in competition clothing, ready to compete. Tracksuits, bags and other belongings, shall be placed in the baskets at the Final Call, and these will be taken to the Kit Collection at the end of the Mixed Zone for collection after the race.

Qualification in Sprint Events

For 100m, 200m, 400m, 100/110m Hurdles and 400m Hurdles (Men and Women) the qualification system will be as follows:

  • There will be three rounds: Pre-qualification round, semi-final and final;
  • The pre-qualification round will include all athletes entered by the Member Federation and eligible to compete in the championships, except 12 top athletes (12 best ranked athletes according to the 2022 Season List entered by their Member Federation and to a maximum of 3 per country) directly qualified to the Semi-finals;
  • There will be three Semi-Finals where the 12 top athletes of the 2022 Season List and the 12 best athletes from the Pre-Qualification round will compete;
  • The two first athletes in each Semi-Final plus two athletes with the best performance in the Semi-finals will be qualified for the final.

Hot Seats for Track Events

After the first heat of the semi-finals, two athletes who would be “qualifiers by time” for the final, at that moment, would be asked to enter into a dedicated area located just before the live Mixed Zone in order to watch there the next heat. After the next heat, those athletes would be replaced by new “qualifiers by time”, if relevant. Once the athletes leave the area, they can proceed to make their way through the Mixed Zone, following the usual procedures. The following track events are concerned:

  • 100m, 100m & 110m Hurdles,
  • 200m, 400m, 400m Hurdles, 800m.

Field Events

In all throwing events, each athlete is allowed to have two practice trials under the supervision of the judges, more if time allows. The athletes will be called to the practice trials in the competition order.

In all remaining field events, the practice trials will be supervised by the relevant judges.

In qualification for the final in horizontal jumps and throwing events, all athletes will be allowed a maximum of three trials, but any athlete qualifying after their first or second trial are not allowed to take any further trials.  In the finals top eigth athletes after 3rd attempt, will be allowed three additional attempts (six in total).

In the Finals of the horizontal jumps and throwing events, the competing order for the fourth and fifth rounds of trials shall be in the reverse ranking order based on the results after the first three rounds of trials. The competing order for the final round of trials shall be in the reverse ranking order recorded after the fifth round of trials.

In the Long Jump and Triple Jump, as per the WA Rules, a video system will be used to detect, if an athlete breaks the vertical plane of the take-off line with any part of their take-off foot / shoe. There will be a video screen in the infield, next to the runway, where the athletes would be able to see the video/picture of their take off.

There will be also CIS provided next to the athletes’ benches in all field events. To enable following the live results by the athletes, if needed.

Combined Events

Competitors taking part in combined events must report to the main Call Room for the first event of each day.

A resting area for the competitors taking part in combined events will be provided at the stadium, where athletes can rest and wait for their next event. As the presence of the athletes in this room between events is not obligatory, all athletes must report to the Combined Events Call Room, directly next to this room before the start of an event to undergo their final check.

Fruit, energy bars, sandwiches and drinks will be provided in the resting area. Toilets and showers facilities will also be available.

A lunch Buffet will also be available according to the following times:

Access to the Combined Events Resting Area is limited to the competitors and any other accredited person per athlete e.g. coach, doctor, etc.(one per athlete + one per team), who are in possession of the appropriate Combined Events Resting Area pass. These passes can be collected at the TIC, the day before the start of each combined event competition.

Combined Events athletes will only go through the Mixed Zone at the end of the last discipline of each session.

Road Events

Warm-up Area

The Warm-up Area and Team Tent Area for Road Events will be located in an exclusive area at Odeonsplatz (see Appendix). The Team Tents for Team Physiotherapy will be available and will be allocated. Athletes are asked to store their bags in the Team Tents during the competition.

Last-minute warm-up will be possible in a separated area after the Call Room, before being accompanied by officials to the start line. Toilets will be provided in this area.

Start / Finish Area

The start and finish line of all Road Events will be at Odeonsplatz, where Team Tents and Call Room will also be located. After the race, and after having passed the Mixed Zone, athletes will return to the Teams Tent Area to collect their clothing and return the transponders in the kit collection.

Drinking / Sponging and Refreshment Stations

Marathon

There will be two Drinking/Sponging Stations and two Refreshment Stations based on the four-lap course:

  • Drinking/Sponging Stations 1 at km: 4.4, 14.4, 24.4 & 34.4
  • Drinking/Sponging Stations 1 at km: 10.1, 20.1, 30.1 & 40.1
  • Refreshment Station 1 at km: 2.3, 12.3, 22.3 & 32.3
  • Refreshment Station 2 at km: 7, 17, 27 & 37

Both types of stations will be on the right-hand side of the running direction, slightly off the shortest route. Signs indicating the up-coming Refreshment and Drinking/Sponging Stations Station will be displayed 100m before the station. A sufficient number of toilets will be located at the end of each Refreshment Station and each Drinking/Sponging station.

Drinking / Sponging Stations

Tables at the Drinking/Sponging Stations will be arranged as followed and at a distance of about 5m between the groups:

  • Two tables with water bottles
  • Two tables with sponges
  • One table with ice

Runners will pick up their bottles and sponges on their own.

Personal Refreshments

The Team Members or Team Officials are authorised to place refreshments directly into the athletes’ hands from the designated place behind the team’s table. According to the number of athletes competing by country, each team will have its own table or share a table with another team, which will be marked with the national flag and the World Athletics country code. The tables are arranged in alphabetical order according to the three-letter country code.

The LOC can provide two bottles for each athlete competing in marathon. The bottles should be picked-up in the TIC the day before the race. Athletes can also use their own bottles, as long as they comply with the World Athletics advertising regulations.

All personal refreshments must clearly display the following information:

  • Athletes’ name
  • Athletes’ bib number
  • Country Code
  • Number and kilometer of the Refreshment Stations at which the refreshment is to be placed.

Athletes are responsible for the identification of their bottles. Stickers will be also available at the TIC the day before each competition.

For Athletes, who will not be accompanied by Team Members or Team Officials, the judge, who is responsible for the Refreshment Station, will place the bottles on the specific table.

Still water in bottles, sponges and ice will be provided by the LOC at the station on the tables located after the personal refreshment tables, which can be picked up by the athletes on their own.

Water bottles and ice will also be available for the use of the teams at the Refreshment Stations.

An athlete who receives or collects refreshment or water from a place other than the official stations, except where provided for medical reasons from or under the direction of race officials, or takes the refreshment of another athlete, should, for a first such offence, be warned by the Referee normally by showing a yellow card. For a second offence, the Referee shall disqualify the athlete, normally by showing a red card. The athlete shall then immediately leave the course.

Refreshment Station 1 (km 2.3)

Due to the fact that Refreshment Station 1 (km 2.3) is located close to the Team Tent Area there will be no delivery of personal refreshment to the station by the LOC. Team Members or Team Officials will have to bring the athletes’ Personal Refreshments to the Refreshment Station themselves.

Refreshment Station 2 (km 7)

Delivery of personal refreshment to this station is to be arranged by the LOC or directly by Team Members or Team Officials. Delivery of Personal Refreshment to this station is to be arranged by the LOC or directly by Team Members or Team Officials.

Athletes, Team Members or Team Officials can drop off their personal refreshments at the Sub-TIC located next to the Team Tent Area on the day of the competition. The Personal Refreshment bottles will be stored in insulated boxes and transported to the Personal Refreshment Station 1 by LOC Officials.

Team Members or Team Officials can also bring the athletes’ personal refreshments to the refreshment station themselves.

On race day, a shuttle bus will leave from Odeonsplatz at 10:10h driving the Team Members or Team Officials to the station. For transport back to Odeonsplatz, a shuttle bus will pick up the Team Members or Team Officials after the last runner has passed.

The refreshment station is also easily accessible by bike or on foot from Odeonsplatz (ca. 1000m). It is located in Prinzregentenstraße, opposite the Bavarian National Museum.

Mist Station

There will be two Mist Stations located slightly off the racing line in kilometres (approx.) 5.9 and 10.7. A mist station consists of a shower-like apparatus releasing a fine spray of water from above. Participants can choose whether or not to use the mist station.

Signs indicating the upcoming mist station will be displayed at 100m before the station.

Race Walking Events

There will be a Drinking/Sponging Stations and a Refreshment Station based on the 2km round course:

Both types of stations will be on the right-hand side of the walking direction. Signs indicating the upcoming stations will be displayed at 100m before the station. A sufficient number of toilets will be located at the end of each Refreshment Station and each Drinking/Sponging Station.

Drinking / Sponging Stations

Tables at the Drinking/Sponging Stations will be arranged as followed and at a distance of about 5m between the groups:

  • Two tables with water bottles
  • Two tables with sponges
  • One table with ice

Runners will pick up their bottles, sponges and ice on their own.

Personal Refreshments

The Team Members or Team Officials are authorised to place refreshments directly into the athletes’ hands from the designated place behind the team’s table. Such authorised persons may not enter the course or obstruct any athlete. These persons shall not, under any circumstances, run with an athlete while he/she is taking refreshments, as stated in World Athletics Technical Rule TR 54.10.6.

Depending on the number of athletes competing per country, each team will have its own table or share a table with other teams. The tables will be marked with the national flag and the World Athletics country code. The tables are arranged in alphabetical order according to the three-letter country code. Ice will be provided by the LOC at the Personal Refreshment Stations.

LOC can provide two bottles for each athlete competing in a race walking event. The bottles should be picked up in the TIC on the day before the race. Athletes can also use their own bottles, as long as they comply with the World Athletics advertising regulations.

All personal refreshments must clearly display the following information:

  • World Athletics country code

The refreshment station is easily accessible by bike, on foot (approx. 1000m) or with metro (1 station to “Universität”, free ride with accreditiation) from Odeonsplatz.

Mist Station

There will be a mist station located approx. halfway along the course on the western side. 

A mist station consists of a shower-like apparatus releasing a fine spray of water from above. Participants can choose whether or not to use the mist station.

Signs indicating the upcoming mist station will be displayed at 100m before the station.

Assistance

During the competition, athletes are not allowed to give or receive any kind of assistance in any manner. When a competitor is unable to continue walking/running due to physical difficulties, he must inform the nearest judge. To indicate his intention of quitting the race, the runner shall remove the bibs with his/her name and identification number. A competitor is not permitted to receive assistance from any person other than a member of the official medical staff appointed by the LOC, who is properly identified as such, and who may carry out an on-the-spot medical examination.  There are first aid stations located along the course.

Marathon team scoring & tie

The times of the first 3 (three) finishing runners of each team shall be aggregated in order to determine the finishing order, the team with the lowest aggregate time being the winner, and so on. A tie shall be resolved in favour of the team whose last scoring runner finishes nearest to the first place.

A team finishing with fewer than 3 (three) runners will not be classified in the team result.

All runners finishing shall be classified individually and shall be eligible for individual awards.

Race Walking lap scoring & posting board

There will be lap scorers next to the course, who will show the walkers the number of remaining laps.

Two Posting Boards showing red cards and disqualifications will be installed along the course. One Posting Board will be placed approx. 120m before the finish line next to the Penalty Zone. A second one will be installed next to the Refreshment Station at Geschwister-Scholl-Platz.

Race Walking Penalty Rule

Race walking events will be conducted using the “Penalty” Rule (World Athletics rule TR 54.7.3):

  • When one athlete receives 3 Red Cards, he must receive a communication from the Chief Judge or his Assistant showing him a paddle with the time penalty on both sides and he must stop in the penalty zone at the first opportunity.
  • The penalty time to apply is 2 minutes for 20km and 3.5 minutes for 35km races. 
  • At the first opportunity the athlete will be guided by the Chief Judge’s Assistant into the penalty zone.
  • The time penalty starts immediately as the athlete enters the penalty zone.
  • The athlete shall be shown an appropriate card notifying him when 10 seconds remain on the penalty.
  • After the time penalty and following the instructions of the official in charge of the penalty zone, the athlete shall re-enter the event.
  • The athlete is not judged in the penalty zone.
  • If the athlete then receives any additional Red Card(s) (from the judges who had not previously sent him one), he shall be disqualified and the Chief Judge or his assistant must notify the disqualification as soon as possible.
  • If an athlete receives 4 or more Red Cards before stopping in the penalty zone, the athlete shall be disqualified and the Chief Judge or his assistant must notify the disqualification as soon as possible.
  • If an athlete receives the third Red Card at the late stage of the race and it’s not possible for the Chief Judge or his assistant to notify the athlete that he must stop in the penalty zone, the athlete shall finish the race and the penalty time shall be added to his official time.
  • The Chief Judge maintains the power to immediately disqualify the athlete in the last 100m of a race (no time penalty).

Coaching Zones

To allow communication between athletes and coaches, seats have been reserved in the stands close to the field events (see Appendix). Special passes for each field event will be distributed from the TIC to the teams, according to the Final Confirmation. There will be one pass per athlete competing. The pass is only valid when accompanied by a team accreditation, this accreditation needs to be visible at all times.

Timing & Measurement

The official timing and measurement for all Stadia and Road Events will be provided by ATOS and will be displayed on all the official electronic timing instrument and processed into ATOS data and digital solutions. 

For all track events the running time will be displayed on electronic timing scoreboards which are located at the end of each straight. Photocells will be used to stop the clock for unofficial split and finish times. Athletes live tracking will be provided for all races from 400m onwards to offer detailed intermediate splits and unofficial rankings on finish line. This requires the use of a chip placed into the front bib of each athletes competing in those races. 

For all Field events measurements are going to be published on field of play displays as soon it’s been official.

All field events will be measured by ATOS scientific measurement equipment (including Video Distance Measurement for horizontal Jumps and Electronic Distance Measurement for throwing events).

Post Competition Procedures

Stadia Events

After the competition, athletes leave immediately through the mixed zone.

In the mixed zone, all athletes meet the media: first TV, then radio and finally the written press. It is for the athlete to decide whether he/she will give an interview.

The clothing baskets will be brought to the kit collection area located after the mixed zone. In case a shoe check is required, it will also be done within the kit collection.

The first three athletes in each event may be asked to attend an official press conference. These press conferences will take priority over all other interview requirements. They will usually be held before doping controls.

Road Events

After the competition, athletes leave immediately through the Mixed Zone.

In the Mixed Zone, all athletes meet the media: first TV, then radio and finally the written press. It is for the athlete to decide whether he/she will give an interview.

Medal Ceremonies will take place immediately after the last athlete finishes the race. The mixed Zone process may be interrupted during Medal Ceremonies and will continue afterwards.

Athletes will then follow athletes flow to the kit collection, where they also should return the transponder. The Kit Collection is located after the Mixed Zone.

The first three athletes in each event may be asked to attend an official press conference. These press conferences will take priority over all other interview requirements. They will usually be held before doping controls.

Protests and Appeals

Protests and appeals are permitted and will be processed in accordance with World Athletics Rule 8 of the Technical Rules.

In the first instance, protests must be made orally to the Referee by the athlete himself/herself or by someone acting on his/her behalf or by an official representative of a team (World Athletics Rule 8 of the Technical Rules). Such person or team may protest only if they are competing in the same round of the event to which the protest (or subsequent appeal) relates.

Where the appropriate Referee is not accessible or available, the protest should be made online through the virtual TIC. Protests concerning the result or conduct of an event shall be made within 30 minutes of the official announcement of the result of that event (posted on the official digital TIC posting board).

If the final decision of the Referee is not satisfactory an appeal can be submitted to the Jury of Appeal also through the virtual TIC.

Any written appeal to the Jury of Appeal must be made in accordance with World Athletics Rule 8 of the Technical Rules and by a responsible official on behalf of the athlete and submitted online within 30 minutes after the official announcement of the decision made by the Referee.

When submitting an appeal form, the team acknowledges that a fee of €100 will be deducted from European Athletics Subvention to be paid by the end of the year unless the appeal is successful. The Jury’s decision will be provided in writing.
