Host City

Banská Bystrica is a city in central Slovakia located on the Hron river in a long and wide valley encircled by the mountains. Thanks to its location, Banská Bystrica is considered the heart of Slovakia. The name of the largest city in central Slovakia means something like „mining stream“. It lies at the confluence of the eponymous Bystrica and Hron rivers. At present, Banská Bystrica is the economic, administrative, and cultural centre of central Slovakia.

With 78 327 inhabitants, Banská Bystrica is the sixth most populous municipality in Slovakia. he first written mention of it dates from 1255, and in the Middle Ages it was a free royal city. The present town was founded by German settlers; however, it was built upon a former Slavic settlement. It obtained the municipal privileges of a free royal town of the Kingdom of Hungary in 1255. As a historical city with an easy access to the surrounding mountains, Banská Bystrica is a popular winter and summer tourist destination. T

Today‘s modern Banská Bystrica is a youthful student town (Matej Bel University dormitories accommodate many participants of the current championship) and benefits from its advantageous location in the middle of mountains providing opportunities for hiking and physical activities. It is also favorably situated within the country and the entire Central European region. It is only 206 km to the capital Bratislava, 164 km to Budapest, 267 km to Vienna, 465 km to Prague and 489 km to Warsaw.

Already as a 2017 European City of Sport, Banská Bystrica was announced by European Athletics as the host city of the 2024 European Athletics U18 Championshipsat the end of June 2022.
